How to Select a Wedding Planner by Davids

Planning a wedding can be stressful. Sometimes, it’s better to let a professional handle it for you so you can relieve yourself of the stress associated with what’s supposed to be the best day of your life. Here are some tips for how to select the wedding planner for you.

1. Decide how much you want the wedding planner to take care of. Do you want the planner to only hire the people you want to do certain things for you? Do you want the wedding planner to only plan the reception? Or do you want the wedding planner to do everything, but run things by you? How much control you want and leeway you give them will help determine not only the costs, but what things you still need to take care of yourself.

2. Make sure your wedding planner fully understands what you want for your wedding. Do you want a lot of flowers? Do you want certain colors? Are you looking for a certain type of music? Do you want square or round tables? Some of these things may seem trite, but they’re the kind of things that can cause distress if you end up getting something you didn’t want.

3. Try to determine the temperament of your wedding planner. Although there’s no excuse for bad behavior on your part, it’s almost a given that there are going to be some things you want to change. What you don’t want is to work with someone who can’t see themselves as not making any mistakes and bailing on you at a critical juncture of your plans.

4. Make sure that your wedding planner is going to be accessible for you. You certainly don’t want to be able to reach someone 24/7 if you’re realistic, but it’s not unreasonable to expect to be contacted within at least an hour or two if you have questions or needs. If you can’t get that kind of commitment, you need to find someone who will give it to you; after all, you’re paying them a lot of money.

5. Make sure that your wedding planner is committed only to you on that date, for that time. You want the attention to be on you, but some wedding planners will book dates like the airlines, trying to take care of more than one client at a time. Sure, maybe they can handle a wedding early in the afternoon and one late into the evening on the same day, but maybe they can’t. Make sure you’re comfortable with the level of attention you’re going to get.

6. The biggest tip of all; don’t be cheap when selecting a wedding planner. What you’re doing is hiring someone to take care of things you don’t want to do, or don’t have the time to do. If you go cheap, you’ll get what you pay for. Just like tipping in hotels, the more you’re willing to spend, the better the attention that will be paid to your needs.
