Your Wedding and Insurance, What You Should Know

By Jonathan L Nelson

The chance to get married and embark on a new life is one of the most exciting moments a person can experience. The world becomes filled with romance, love and expectations. However, it’s easy to forget about all those pesky financial details that accompany this life changing experience. Although these details are hardly as exciting, they do require careful consideration, especially when it comes to insurance. This is the time when you and your future spouse will have lots of decisions to make that can impact your financial future. Let’s take a look at some of the issues that come with being Mrs. and Mr.

Auto Insurance

    • If you and your spouse have separate policies, now would be a good time to add each other as drivers (if you haven’t already).

    • Being married is usually a plus in the eyes of most insurance companies. You may see a break in premium because this indicates responsibility.

    • By combining the vehicles and drivers on one policy, you will more than likely see a lower rate due to discounts such as multi-vehicle.

    • Homeowners’s and Renter’s Insurance

    • More than likely, you both will be living in the same household which means having only one homeowner’s or renter’s policy. This is a nice benefit since you will only be paying for one policy amongst each other.

    • If you received any high valued presents, be sure to add them to a home inventory in case you ever have to file a claim. In some cases, you may even want to add these items to your insurance policy (such as jewelry). If you don’t already have a household inventory, it is strongly recommended to create one.

    • Before the Wedding

  • Planning a wedding is probably one of the most stressful parts of the whole process. Anything can mess up the big day, whether it be weather or a missing officiant. Wedding insurance policies are a great way to safeguard your investment and really don’t cost much ($125-$300). These will cover financial losses if any damages or problems occur during your ceremony and or reception which results in a rescheduling.

Conclusion

No one really wants to think about insurance when they are about to get married but let’s face it, it’s one of those details that can have a big impact on your financial future. Whether it’s combining policies or taking advantage of new discounts, your local independent agent can help you enhance your insurance protection before and after your wedding.
